Summary: Chapters 12 & 13

Scout discovers that Dill don’t want to be with them. Atticus has to go outside of the town for two weeks, so Calpurnia must be with them. Calpurnia decide to take them to a church with her. They go to an African church and they were so amazed because it was so different to their church service. They are also amazed to find out that the church collection is going to Helen Robinson, Tom Robinson’s wife, and the Reverend is not letting anyone leave until they have collected 10 dollars, which is what she needs to support her kids for a week. Finally, all the people bring money and the doors were opened. Jem and Scout find out that Tom is in jail because he is accused of raping Bob Ewell’s daughter, a white person. This produce that all the town is thinking about the case and about the responsibility of Atticus. When Jem and Scout come back to home, they find her aunt Alexandra waiting for them, sitting in their porch.

Jem and Scout have a lot of questions for Aunt Alexandra and she said that she will be in Maycomb a few days, or years. Alexandra begins trying to instruct them two on how to be a proper Finch, but both, Scout and Jem, have no interest in becoming a little “gentleman” and a little “lady”, and hardly bother trying to learn. Aunt Alexandra orders Atticus to lecture them on the subject of their ancestry. He makes a valiant attempt, but succeeds only in making Scout cry.
