Advertising & Mass Media Summary

Advertising: is a type of communication that is used to persuade, through a message, an audience to do or not to do something (like buying a product), to modify a conduct (like smoking or driving under the influence of alcohol) or for transmitting political ideologies (political propaganda).

Mass Media: refers to the technologies that have a major role in the society and that permits communication (means of communication). These technologies are used to deliver information to a huge audience at the same time, for example: TV, radio, Internet, newspapers, magazines, etc.

As a result: Effective advertising is only possible thanks to the massive means of communication, otherwise, the message that the advertiser wants to deliver, won’t be properly received by the audience.

First Letter (to be graded)

Monday 22nd of August, 1932

Dear David,

How are you and your aunt? I will tell you what you asked in your last letter, but I don’t know where to start...

Do you remember I told you that my father was a doctor and my mom a nurse? Through their jobs and effort we could have a better life than the rest here, in Nashville. Our house is quite large, but we have to consider that I live with my parents, grandparents and my other three brethren. Beside us live the Sawyers, who have three children; Elisa, the eldest, is my age, 15, and John, the youngest, just turned nine years old.

The neighbourhood is very nice, and I have many friends, sometimes we play to the war on a field that’s behind our houses; other times, we go alone the creek to collect insects… When we return, my cook is waiting us with a glass of lemonade on our porch, and then we start to review our bugs, or remember episodes from the war.

The other day there was a terrible sandstorm, and as we were playing outside, we decided to go home quickly; as their parents were not in home, I invited the Sawyers to take refuge in mine. Trying to spend the time, y remembered that once we tuned the radio on a very interesting programme, so we gather around it and I turned on. For our surprise, we couldn’t find anything, so I thought better that we six (Joseph was in his bed) went up stairs to my bedroom, and then take out those wooden toys that my father brought me once.

When the storm passed, we went outside again, and we started to walk throw the wide streets in search of someone. The neighbourhood is relatively small, so we didn’t took much going throw it, but we couldn’t find any other friend. In sight of this, we went back to my front garden, and we begin reviewing the insects that we found; in that moment, that group of ladies that enjoy talking about other’s problems walked beside us… We overheard that the old Nash’s shoe factory had gone bankrupt.

How are things going there? Did you solve the problem with Francis? I’m still waiting for that picture!

Yours affectionately,
Dylan

Second, Third & Fourth Letter

Friday 14th of October, 1932

Dear David,

Yes, we are very well! Some time ago my father doesn’t take holidays and we didn’t have time to go fishing, as we usually did before. As you know, things are hard here, every day my parents had more and more work in the hospital. So last Wednesday, both took two weeks of vacation, they looked too tired in the last time...

We decided to go to the lake a weekend, near here, in Shelby Park. The trip was awesome; we arrived very early in the morning with my dad for trying to catch something and have it for lunch time. Later, my mom and my three brethren came, and they brought us some sandwiches because we didn’t have time to have breakfast on the morning. After that, they started to sort a table that we have for this occasions. Once we collected a trout for everyone, we took a break and I went where my brethren and mother were playing (after they finished sorting the table). Long time ago they wasn’t so happy, as same as my brethren. We made a fire, we cooked the trout and we had lunch. We began to order before the night came down and we got back home, an amazing day...

In this podcast I will answer these questions about chapter 5: What reasons does Atticus give for the children not to play the Boo Radley game? Do you think he is right? Why? What sort of man is Atticus? What do you think about his role as a father? Support with evidence.
