Text Analysis
This chat room conversation is constructed with a non-standard language, represented by the use of e-mail and text messages features.
In first place, we can see abbreviations, an e-mail characteristic, of the weekday’s names, like “Tues”, “Wed”, “Thurs”, “Fri”, “Sat” and “Sun”. In the same line of e-mails, in the text are present prosodic features, by the use of upper case letters for the word “BOOK”, where the sender give emphasis and demonstrate his excitation about his new book.
In the second place, also we can see text messages characteristics, like: phonetic spelling, where Geoff uses “wanna” instead of want to, trying to imitate the spoken language; and grammatical compression, by the omission of some subjects, like in “lots of lounging about I trust” or “Lounging and some blowing-of-the-gift-money shopping today.”
